Late Beethoven and C. P. E. Bach, Part II
Mike Cheng-Yu Lee Plays Beethoven's Sonata in A major, Op. 101
This is the second of three programs that explore Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s musical imprints on the later piano music of Beethoven. (See here for the first program presented by Thomas Reeves.) In lieu of written program notes, the third program will be a conversation with CCHK director, Annette Richards, on the dislocated narrative archetype of Op. 101 viewed through the fantastical prism of C. P. E. Bach. The sonata features centrally in the final chapter, “Picturesque Beethoven and the veiled Isis,” of her 2001 book The Free Fantasia and the Musical Picturesque.
